There is no credible evidence that Albert Einstein created a standardized IQ test. There is also no verified record that he took one. The “Einstein IQ test” most people encounter online is a five-house logic puzzle—usually called Einstein’s Riddle or the Zebra Puzzle—whose authorship is unknown.

Why the name stuck

Attaching a difficult puzzle to the world’s most recognizable symbol of genius makes it more memorable and shareable. The name also encourages a tempting but false leap: “If Einstein made it, solving it must reveal whether I am a genius.”

In reality, the puzzle is a constraint-satisfaction problem. It rewards organized note-taking, careful reading and repeated elimination. Those are useful cognitive skills, but they are only a narrow slice of what professional intelligence batteries assess.

Do not convert the result into an IQ. Finishing in five minutes, fifty minutes or not at all cannot scientifically establish a score such as 120, 140 or 160.

The central idea

You do not need a sudden flash of genius. You need to create a chain in which each clue removes possibilities. The strongest clues are fixed positions and exact adjacency.

  1. Place the Norwegian in house 1 and milk in house 3.
  2. Because the Norwegian lives next to blue, house 2 is blue.
  3. The green–ivory ordered pair cannot use houses 1–2 or 2–3; later constraints force ivory 4 and green 5.
  4. House 1 cannot be blue, red, ivory or green, so it is yellow and therefore the painting house.
  1. Anchor the fixed facts
    House 1 is Norwegian. House 2 is blue. House 3 serves milk. These placements immediately eliminate the same values elsewhere.
  2. Place yellow and painting
    House 1 cannot be red because its resident is not English. It cannot be green or ivory because those colors must form an adjacent ordered pair. Therefore house 1 is yellow and its activity is painting.
  3. Use the horse clue
    The painter lives next to the horse. Since painting is in house 1, the horse must be in house 2.
  4. Resolve green and ivory
    The only arrangement that survives all constraints places ivory in house 4 and green in house 5. Coffee is therefore in house 5.
  5. Resolve red and English
    With yellow, blue, ivory and green placed, house 3 is red. The English resident therefore lives in house 3.
  6. Place tea and Ukrainian
    The Norwegian cannot drink tea, house 3 already has milk and house 5 has coffee. Tea settles in house 2, making its resident Ukrainian.
  7. Place gardening and orange juice
    The remaining drink pattern and resident–pet constraints place orange juice and gardening in house 4.
  8. Finish by elimination
    House 4 becomes Spanish with the dog. House 5 becomes Japanese with astronomy and the zebra. House 1 has the fox and water; house 2 has violin and horse; house 3 has chess and snails.
  9. Answer the questions
    The Norwegian drinks water. The Japanese resident owns the zebra.

Does solving Einstein’s Riddle measure IQ?

Not by itself. The puzzle can demonstrate successful reasoning on one structured problem, but an IQ score is a norm-referenced estimate built from a broader sample of tasks under standardized conditions.

Why no valid conversion table exists

A conversion such as “solved in 10 minutes = IQ 140” would require a large representative sample, uniform instructions, controlled timing, evidence that scores are reliable, and a demonstrated relationship with established intelligence measures. The internet versions vary in wording, assistance, age suitability and prior exposure, so those requirements are not met.

Better interpretation: “I solved a difficult constraint puzzle under these conditions.” That statement is accurate and still worth celebrating.

What was Albert Einstein’s IQ?

No verified score is known. Claims of 160, 180 or other exact values generally work backward from Einstein’s achievements. That is not equivalent to testing him with a standardized instrument during his lifetime.

He did not “fail math”

Einstein’s first attempt at the Zürich Polytechnic entrance examination is often simplified into the claim that he failed mathematics. The historical account is more interesting: his performance in mathematics and physics was excellent, while some language, history and other general subjects were insufficient for admission at that time.

He completed additional schooling in Aarau and entered the Polytechnic in 1896. This shows an uneven academic profile and a non-linear route—not mathematical incompetence.

Strong ability does not mean uniformly perfect performance

Gifted people can be bored, oppositional, inconsistent, poorly matched to an instructional style or simply weaker in some subjects. A single grade, entrance examination or anecdote should not be used to diagnose intelligence.

The late-talking story
